Surrey

Surry

A delightful George III wooden tipstaff with a turned end to represent a stylised crown.
Decorated with a crown over the 1801-1816 royal arms within a garter belt. Below this are two cartouches.
That on the left containing the words 'Surry 1802', and that on the right with script initials within (possibly 'IP').

Godalming

A fine Victorian truncheon for Godalming, Surrey.

Decorated with a crown over 'VR' cipher and a shield containing the arms of the town, being a woolsack, the date '1846' and number '2'. Below this are the initials 'G C' for Godalming Constabulary.

Fenn Clark illustrates a similar example, numbered 4 on page 175 of his book.

This truncheon travelled many miles before finding a home in my collection.

It was purchased from a gentleman in New Zealand who brought it in Australia where it was described as a colonial piece.
