Special Constable Truncheons - Page 2

Special Constable

Victorian special constable's truncheon in the Parker style.

Numbered 219 in the cartouche.

Special constable's truncheon for St. Mary's, Fulham.

Decorated with 'S.C.', 'St. M', 'F.'

R.O.

Victorian special constable's truncheon decorated with a crown over a 'VR' cipher and circular cartouche with 'SPECIAL CONSTABLE' and 'R.O.' within.

It is possible that R.O. relates to the Royal Ordnance where it is known special constables were used to protect Government property during the Fenian uprisings of the 1860's.

Fenn Clark illustrates a further three examples on page 141 of his book.
