Norfolk

A distinguishing characteristic of truncheons from East Anglia is that many have been turned with either a ball or bulbous top. There are of course many examples which take on a traditional style. However this remains a good indicator that the piece originates from either Norfolk or Suffolk.

Whitlingham

Parish constable's truncheon decorated with a crown over the words 'Whitlingham', 'Constable'.

This piece probably dates from the early nineteenth century.

Whitlingham is a district on the outskirts of Norwich.

Harleston

Although this is a William IV truncheon it is decorated with the royal arms for pre 1800.

The reverse is inscribed with 'Wm Hunting 1836 Harleston'

Whinburg

This example is decorated with a crown and inscribed 'Whinburg'
