This highly decorative truncheon is typical of those presented by the outgoing mayor when it was customary each year to present truncheons and long staves to the parish and head constables.

The front is decorated with the Victorian arms above the arms for the City of Cambridge and dated 1839.

The reverse is inscribed 'Hy HEADLY ESQr MAYOR'
